Backflow Prevention

Backflow prevention systems are used to stop the contamination and harmful substances that are often used in residential housing and businesses from being drawn back into the public drinking water supply.

Backflow is the unplanned reversal of the flow of water into the water supply system and is caused by a drop in water pressure, allowing water to flow from residential or commercial buildings in the opposite direction. It is a big risk that can affect the quality and safety of our drinking water.

As the owner of the property, it’s up to you!

The installation and annual checking of the operation and maintenance of any backflow prevention device is the responsibility of the property owner. In the Christchurch City Council District it is a mandatory requirement to have a hazard protection system in place at the boundary of the property and Annual Backflow Prevention testing is required by law.

For most homeowners the council will provide basic backflow protection at the point of connection to the public supply, however this is often not be enough and depends on the water hazards are in the home.
